Staging company finding its way

Despite their industry being challenged by the pandemic, Isaac Kinakin and his Richmond-based staging and event design company are persevering.

“This is the only industry I’ve ever (worked in)—it’s very near and dear to my heart,” says Kinakin, the director of business development at Scene Ideas Inc.

During the initial stages of the pandemic, Kinakin says things changed “within one fell swoop.” Initially smaller cuts were made to extraneous spending and wages, but after a couple of months the company had to shut down everything for about a month.

Local Event Company Fighting the Pandemic

Physical distancing, small social circles, fewer faces and bigger spaces – all things we have heard time and time again during this COVID-19 pandemic. All live events – concerts, conferences, trade shows, weddings – have been cancelled and many businesses have had to close their doors for good. But local live event company, Scene Ideas Inc., has fully pivoted away from live events to survive this pandemic and stay in business.

Scene Ideas is a staging rentals and custom scenery shop, originally created as the necessary solution to meet the growing needs of the local events industry in Vancouver. Their 12,000 square foot facility in Richmond is equipped to handle all aspects of fabrication from woodworking to welding, metal work, scenic painting, scenic automation, and sculpting.

COVID-19: B.C. reveals how $242 million in federal funds will be used to boost school health and safety measures

To address health and safety concerns and requirements, school districts and independent schools can use funds, based on local needs, including:

  • improving air systems in schools, such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning, portable air scrubbers, and increased utility costs;
  • increasing hand hygiene, including additional handwashing and hand sanitizing stations, installing touchless faucets, or additional supplies;
  • installing plexiglass and other barriers, providing outdoor learning spaces, and adapting classrooms and school buses to minimize physical contact;
  • purchasing additional cleaning supplies (sprayers, fogger machines, etc.) for frequent cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces;
  • purchasing additional masks, face shields, or other PPE;
  • increasing staff and covering salary costs for additional hours for meeting health and safety guidelines in schools.

Incredible Event Companies Giving Back & Doing Good

Scene Ideas was originally created as the necessary solution to meet the growing needs of the local events industry in Vancouver. The company was incorporated in 2004 by three founding partners whose combined experience in scenic carpentry, project management, technical direction, live stage management and design, along with a shared vision, pushed the creative envelope in Vancouver’s live event industry. This same vision has led Scene Ideas to become an industry leader, working on all of the major music festivals in Western Canada, as well as many large scale corporate and private events.

14 B.C. businesses and others doing good during COVID-19

A supplier to the live events industry, staging specialist Scene Ideas is fighting to stay in business during the pandemic. Without any large-scale events on the horizon, the Richmond-based company has capitalized on its strengths as a custom manufacturer and builder by offering operational health and safety solutions, including personal protective equipment and Plexiglas barriers, to help businesses reopen. Among its new products is a series of lawn signs bearing positive messages such as “Be Kind, Be Calm, Be Safe.” Signs are $20 each, with $10 from each sale going to the Connecting Kids’ Fund, an offshoot of the CKNW Kids’ Fund. Help Scene Ideas reach its $2,000 fundraising goal by ordering signs from the company website, which offers free contactless delivery or shipping via Canada Post.

Kudos: Richmond signs helping kids fund

A Richmond-based scene company is using the unexpected downturn in the economy to help a children’s charity.

Scene Ideas Inc. – based out of Shell Road – is creating lawn signs to lift spirits and raise funds for the CKNW Kids’ Fund’s newly created Connecting Kids’ Fund.

Like most businesses in the events industry, Scene Ideas has been drastically impacted by the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

SCENE IDEAS RAISING MONEY FOR THE CONNECTING KIDS’ FUND

Our friends at Scene Ideas have created lawn signs to help spread positivity and words of encouragement during the COVID-19 crisis; they are also generously donating $10 from the sale of each sign to the Connecting Kids’ Fund, helping to keep vulnerable kids in BC connected to their teachers, support systems and friends, during this challenging time. Their goal is to raise $1,000 for the Connecting Kids’ Fund by May 31st!
